Thursday Poll – A few changes are coming

Over the next week or so we’ll be making some changes to the site here at Roving Crafters. Back when we had 32 visitors a day (and I was damn thrilled to have them!) we could get by with a little freebie site from WordPress. But now there are so many more of you and the upgrades I thought we could put off for at least six more months have to be done pretty soon.

Jump down to the Poll

Its all your fault. You know that right? You readers have forced me into this.

I’ve been stressing in a big way over these upgrades. If I had to do it all by myself, I’d be over in the corner having an anxiety attack. Fortunately I have Jess. Jess has been telling me things like “it will be fine”, “it won’t be as hard as you think”, and “no, you won’t break the internet”.

So we’re doing it. For reals. Wish me luck. And…

…since we are going to be mucking around with the site anyway, I thought this would be a good time to solicit some feedback. I tried to make today’s poll about that. What changes would you like to see? You can click more than one answer and if there is something you want to see happen but its not in the poll, let us know in the comment section. Also, if you’d like to express sympathy for Jess as she drags me kicking and screaming guides me through this process you can put that in the comment section as well. She might need an “atta girl” or two.

  1. Looking at the poll results, it seems that your readers have been enjoying the way you operate this space. I found you when the Woolery pointed us toward your instructions for spinning instructors and stayed for your ideas and humor. And humor. So when I got to the poll I felt guilty asking for more info on sales and thumbnails and stuff, which we all like. But seriously, I like the atmosphere that you bring to your site, and if Jess can help you maintain that along with whatever new features that you’d like to add, I’d say you are both doing a fantastic job. Oh, yeah, I find it so interesting that the technology of today is a tool for learning to spin and otherwise manipulate fiber, one of the oldest activities known to humans. And now I wonder what those first spinners found humorous.

    1. You are not allowed to feel guilty about asking for anything! I want this blog to be less of a monologue and more of a dialogue. I live for feedback. I put all that stuff in the poll because its stuff I want. If I could wave a magic wand, we would have all those improvements in one big POOF!

I’ll keep up the humor… I mean snark… I mean humor. No worries. I was born with the smart-ass gene and have trouble suppressing it in fact.

  2. I like what you have going on here visually, so please don’t change it! I’m one of the search function votes. I know how to make Google search just one site for things, but that can be a pain on my tablet or phone.

  3. Jen, I just found your site a couple of weeks ago. You are funny, creative, and so crafty! I immediately told my knitting friends about how you mix cool knitting instruction and information with thoughts about life- like your cats- and how fun it is to read your posts. ( I went back and read several older ones and yes, if CBC had to experience those horrible things then readers did need to “buck up” and know his story.
As an introvert and a writer who likes creative quirkiness, I just appreciate your style! I hope the posts don’t change too much. They’re great just the way you write them now!

    1. Wonderful! I’m so glad you found us!

I promise that the knitterly rambling and the pictures of cute cats behaving badly will continue. After all playing with yarn and bad cats is pretty much my life! But I do want this to be more than a place where I post and people read. I want it to a place where crafters come to meet up and share. At the risk of sounding dramatic, I’m not the Roving Crafter. We are all the Roving CrafterS. I’m not sure that is coming across…. yet!

But I’ll get there. And Feline Overlord will be off to the side flicking her tail in a scornful way while Cowardly Boy Cat checks to see if I’ve refilled the food bowl.

  4. I think your site is great and actually like it for it’s spartan(ism), is that a word, and I don’t mean it in a negative way. I do love your humor and especially the variety of creative ideas you are willing to share with us. Thanks. Good luck Jess on whatever changes you make to the site, I’ll still be hanging around no matter how it changes, I hope.

    1. Ok! I’m convinced. me and jess both like the minamalist look but we wondered if it might be boring the pants off everyone else. But if ya’ll like, I’m keeping it! I’d rather spend my time writing and knitting (and crocheting and spinning and doing almost anything else) instead of fiddling with computer stuff.

And thanks so much for the words of encouragement. I live for that.

  5. I thought the same thing about the picture. Also kudos to Jess, she is amazing as are you in showing us how to in your lovely videos. Keep the cats and yarn stuff coming.
